Making Therapy Accessible
We know how overwhelming it can be as a parent when you want to provide the best possible care for your child, but the cost makes it inaccessible.
That's why we have created this guide so that you can see the different options that might be available to your family. Because every child deserves access to quality therapy, and we believe that funding shouldn't be what stands in the way of your child and their potential.
Understanding Your Paediatric Physiotherapy Funding Options
When families reach out to us about accessing paediatric physiotherapy services, one of the first things we talk about with them is how to make therapy accessible financially. We like to reassure families that there are actually a few options available, whether you're in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, or regional Queensland.
Check out each option below to see what might available for your family.
NDIS Funding for Children with Disabilities
If your child qualifies for the NDIS, this can be a life changing resource for accessing the therapy and supports they need. The National Disability Insurance Scheme provides comprehensive funding for children with permanent and significant disabilities across Queensland.
What NDIS can fund:
Allied health sessions
Disability related equipment that supports your child's development
Group programs that complement individual therapy
NDIS funding for paediatric physiotherapy is typically allocated under the Capacity Building category for Improved Daily Living. This means the funding is specifically designed to help your child develop skills and independence in their everyday activities.
When we work together, we can help you understand how our therapy fits within your child's NDIS plan, ensuring you're getting the most from this valuable resource. We work with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants.

Medicare Chronic Disease Management Plans
If your child has a condition that is present or likely to be present for 6 months or longer or is terminal, Medicare can subsidise 5 allied health appointments each calendar year through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan.
Important to know:
Your child needs a referral from your GP, paediatrician, or child health nurse
There may be a gap fee, so it's worth discussing costs with your chosen provider beforehand
This can be an excellent way to access therapy sessions whilst awaiting other funding options
We encourage you to have an open conversation with your GP about whether this is an option for your family. Many families across Queensland aren't aware this exists, and it can help make therapy more affordable, particularly in the early stages of your therapy journey.
Medicare Complex Neurodevelopmental Conditions Plan
If your child has a recognised complex neurodevelopmental disorder, they may be eligible for 20 subsidised allied health appointments if referred by their GP, specialist or consultant physician. The Complex Neurodevelopmental Conditions and Eligible Disabilities care plans can only be claimed once in your child's lifetime, so this is a great option if you are beginning your therapy journey and you are awaiting funding from NDIS.
The following conditions are included:
Cerebral Palsy
Down syndrome
Fragile X
Rett syndrome
Angelman syndrome
Microcephaly
Other rare syndromes
This Medicare initiative recognises that children with complex disabilities need early, intensive support to achieve their developmental milestones. Check out the Department of Health website for more information.
Private Health Insurance for Physiotherapy Services
If you have private health insurance with extras cover, allied health services might be included in your policy. This can significantly reduce your out of pocket expenses for therapy sessions.
Key things to check with your private health insurer:
Whether physiotherapy or allied health is covered under your current policy
Your annual limits and how much you've already used
Any gap fees that may apply
Whether pre-approval is required for certain services
We recommend calling your insurance provider directly to find out exactly what's covered in your insurance. Major funds like Medibank, Bupa, and HCF often provide rebates for paediatric physiotherapy services.
Queensland Public Health System Services
The public health system offers outpatient allied health services, and your child can be referred by several healthcare professionals including child health nurses, GPs, or paediatricians.
Whilst wait times and eligibility criteria can vary depending on your location in Queensland, it is a great option, particularly for families who may not qualify for other funding sources.
Charitable Funding and Community Support
Beyond the traditional funding pathways, there are also charitable organisations and community funding options that many Queensland families aren't aware of. These can be particularly valuable for families who may not qualify for other funding sources or need additional support that has been declined by the NDIS.
Charitable organisations that may be able to help include:
These organisations often provide grants or funding assistance for therapy, equipment, or other disability related needs. Each has its own application process and eligibility criteria, but definitely worth exploring if your child is eligible.
Community fundraising is another option that many Queensland families successfully use to access specialised therapy. This might involve organising community events, online crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe, or working with local businesses and service clubs who are often keen to support local families.
